Kanazawa City Designated Cultural Property
Toda Shigemasa was a famous martial arts master trained in the Toda-style of sword fighting, who was engaged as kendo instructor to the vassals of the Kaga clan. These stone tombs are dedicated from right to left to Shigemasa’s second son, Shigemasa himself, his daughter, and his granddaughter, and presumably date back to the Edo period, based on when the four died. Stone tombs like this are a special type of grave marker reserved only for the resting place of certain people such as those dedicated to the relatives of Maeda Toshiie, the first Maeda to rule the Kaga Domain, which can be found in the Maeda Family Graveyard at Mount Nodayama. The existence of the Toda family stone tombs, therefore, proves that the Maeda family held the Toda family in very high regard.
