Zenshoji Temple Sanmon
Kanazawa City Designated Cultural Property
English
This sanmon (“main gate”) was built in the “romon” style: one of two styles of two-storied gates that exist in Japan. The detailing on this gate hints that it dates back to the second half of the 18th century. Compared to other romon-style gates, the Zenshoji temple sanmon is relatively smaller, but the artistic character of its external appearance turned it into an important symbol of this district. Thanks to the Bengara varnish of the main building, the gate is more commonly known as the “Red Gate”.
