Saiyoji Temple Bell Tower
Kanazawa City Designated Cultural Property
English
This bell tower is an example of Zen temple architecture and dates back to 1851. It is assumed from the records that this is a work from the Edo period “Kenninji” carpentry school. The stone platform consists of tomuro-stone, a Kanazawa produced type of stone reserved for important projects such as the stone walls of Kanazawa Castle. Behind the eaves, you can see radially arranged components called fan raftering, a typical structure of Zen Buddhism. The detailing is splendid, and especially the dragon and kirin carvings are noteworthy.
