Nanaine jizo
English
In July 1858, due to a substantial increase in the price of rice, it became difficult for the common people to afford rice and 2000 people reduced to poverty climbed Udatsu Mountain to shout at the top of their lungs about the hardships of their lives. The reverberations of their voices reached the castle and soon after, the castle’s rice reserves were sold wholesale and the rice prices dropped again. The 7 ringleaders who lead this direct appeal were executed, after which 7 Jizo statues were made to pray for the souls of the departed. They hold an offering of rice in their hands.
