Oyama Jinja Shrine East Gate

The east gate is a kara-mon gate, a Japanese style of gate named for the distinctive shape of the roof and which indicates high status. This gate formerly led to the Ninomaru Goten residence within Kanazawa Castle. It was dismantled and rebuilt twice, the second of which was in 1963 when it was moved to its current location.
According to one theory, the gate predates the 1808 fire in Ninomaru Goten. Legend has it that the two dragons carved into the gate summoned water to protect this gate alone from burning.
However, it is also theorized that the gate was built in 1809 during Ninomaru Goten’s reconstruction because part of the gate’s detailing features designs that are characteristic of the late-Edo period.
