Ryuzoji Temple Main Hall
Kanazawa City Designated Cultural Property
English
According to its munafuda (a wooden plaque with written construction records), the Ryuzoji Temple main hall was built in 1683. It is the oldest building in Kanazawa with a known date of construction, and is a valuable cultural asset that serves as a historical reference for temple and shrine architecture.
The current roof is a tile-roof, but there are remaining traces of thin wooden shingles within the framework of the building’s roof. The kibana (the protruding tips of horizontal beams) of the building’s gohai (a pent roof built over the steps leading up to a temple building) is decorated with delicate carvings of whirlpool designs and young leaves, which are typical decorations of the early Edo period (1603-1867).
