Ryuzoji Temple Bell Tower
Kanazawa City Designated Cultural Property
English
Based on the design style of its carvings, the bell tower is thought to have been built around the same year as that of temple bell (1688). There are only a few 17th century buildings in Kanazawa, and along with the main hall, the bell tower is a valuable landmark.
The stone used for the podium base is tomuroishi, a stone material produced in Kanazawa that at that time could only be used in limited places such as in the stone walls of castles. It is a multi-storied structure, which is unusual for a bell tower, and the drums are placed on the upper level. The four columns on the lower level slant inward, which is also unique.
